Frequently Asked Questions
What does the psychiatric evaluation involve? +
The evaluation is completed across two hourlong appointments and is generally conducted in-person.
It may include discussion of your current symptoms, psychiatric and medical history, previous treatment, medications, sleep, substance use, relationships, stressors, physical health, and treatment goals.
When helpful and with your permission, I may also collaborate with other providers involved in your care, such as your therapist or physician.
Why is the psychiatric evaluation completed over two appointments? +
Two sessions provide for a more in-depth assessment and discussion, rather than compressing a complex psychiatric history into a single hour.
The additional time also allows for collaboration with your other providers when useful, and for a detailed discussion of any diagnosis or recommendations with room to address your questions and concerns.
Will I be prescribed medication? +
Not necessarily.
An evaluation does not automatically lead to a prescription, and medication is never the only recommendation.
Depending on your situation, recommendations may include medication, psychotherapy, lifestyle changes, further medical evaluation, or a combination of approaches.
How are treatment decisions made? +
Treatment decisions are collaborative.
I will discuss the reasoning behind my recommendations, the potential benefits and risks of different options, and reasonable alternatives, taking into account your goals, preferences, previous treatment experiences, and concerns.
What are follow-up appointments like? +
Follow-up appointments are generally 30 minutes. 45 minute sessions available when extra time is needed, or when psychotherapy is combined with medication management.
They may include reassessment of symptoms, discussion of how you are responding to medication, review of side effects, changes in your health or circumstances, and reconsideration of the treatment plan when needed.
They also include talking about how life is going—work, relationships, sleep, stress, and anything that has changed since we last met.
The goal is not simply to renew medication, but to continue evaluating whether treatment is helping and whether anything should change.
Do you provide psychotherapy? +
My practice is primarily focused on psychiatric evaluation and medication management.
I do provide psychotherapy on a case-by-case basis when it is clinically appropriate, though I do not generally offer stand-alone ongoing psychotherapy as the primary service.
If I am not the best person to provide the type of psychotherapy you would most benefit from, I will refer you to a trusted colleague who is a better fit.
When you are already working with a therapist, I am happy to collaborate with them.
Do you offer telehealth? +
Yes.
Follow-up appointments are available via telehealth for patients located in New York and New Jersey, although in-person visits are encouraged. Controlled substances are not prescribed through my New Jersey telehealth practice.
I generally prefer to conduct initial psychiatric evaluations in-person at my office on Central Park West near Columbus Circle.
Can you communicate with my therapist or other doctors? +
Yes.
I am happy to collaborate with your therapist, primary care physician, or another clinician.
Can we speak before I schedule an appointment? +
Yes. I offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation call for prospective patients.
The purpose of the call is to briefly discuss what you are looking for, answer initial questions about the practice, and determine whether scheduling an evaluation makes sense.
How accessible are you between appointments? +
Most non-urgent emails receive a response within one business day.
Email and routine between-appointment communication are not appropriate for emergencies. In the event of a psychiatric or medical emergency, patients should access emergency services directly.
